Since falling in love with India during a world trip in the 80’s, Matthew Swabey swore he would somehow find a way to make his living travelling in and around the vibrant and beautiful country with its endless variation and the exceptional craftsmanship that are India.
Since then he has been exploring the vast subcontinent from the well worn trade routes with their sharp talking touts to the deepest interior where tribal traditions have not changed for centuries.
Starting as a buyer for one of the first retailers to bring the craftsmanship and beauty of the Indian arts to an emerging Notting Hill client base, Matthew honed his trade collecting beautiful things as diverse as Empire sandalwood cabinet chests to ornate Moghul window balconies and columns. Since then he has successfully supplied inspirational retailers and designers worldwide.
Choosing to eschew the buzz of city life for the beauty of the Malvern Hills, Matthew
moved to the Herefordshire border, just 20 mins from Junction 7 of the M5. His warehouse,
tucked away in the rural village of Martley surrounded by welcoming pubs and beautiful
walking country, is a secret horde of the unexpected and the beautiful -
His love of India, its people, its fabulous colours and the endless richness of the culture and nature that have inspired its artisans for centuries are the essence of what makes a visit to Mr Matthew an unforgettable and enjoyable experience. Stop for a cup of chai with Matthew and if Topi the springer spaniel is there, she’s very good at catching balls, but not so good at bringing them back.
